  1. #1 Best Colleges in New YorkColumbia UniversityNew York, NY·4 Year·Rating 3.82 out of 5 1,365 reviewsAlum: As a biochemistry student at Columbia University, my experience was extraordinary. The Core Curriculum was a highlight, exposing me to literature, philosophy, art history, and music. This interdisciplinary approach enriched my understanding and fostered critical thinking and analytical writing skills.Beyond academics, I loved engaging with the community through Peer Health Exchange (now S-HEAL), where I educated high school students on health and wellness. This experience enhanced my communication skills and deepened my commitment to public health.Writing for The Spectator allowed me to make scientific concepts accessible, improving my ability to articulate ideas clearly. Additionally, Columbia’s vibrant arts scene, from Miller Theatre performances to Wallach Art Gallery exhibitions, provided a rich cultural balance to my studies.Overall, Columbia offered a holistic education, blending rigorous science, arts, and community involvement, preparing me well for the future.... The urban campus, deeply embedded in NYC, offers unique connections to the city's core communities, enhancing academic and professional experiences. NYU's lively and diverse student communities, such as the LGBTQ+ Center and the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs, have been influential, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. Academically, NYU excels in providing rich research opportunities, including the Dean's Undergraduate Research Fund (DURF) and the Undergraduate Research Conference. However, one area for improvement is financial support for housing and living expenses. The high cost of living in New York City can be challenging, and additional assistance would greatly benefit students.... When you're in the moment, it's easy to see all the bad and be frustrated with things like the crappy campus food, a poor party scene, and a major lack of diversity. But, looking back, I do miss my time at Hamilton. I miss living in a walking community, I miss all the free food and free merchandise the school gave me. I miss the diner. I miss having small classes and being close to my professors. The community there, although not perfect, came together in moments that mattered. The school could be better. The lack of accountability from the administration on social issues and a constant battle between hate speech and lack of punishment for students who harmed others was a constant in all my 4 years. I hope the students continue to push forward and force Hamilton into a socially-accountable mindset.... 12. #10 Best Colleges in New YorkRensselaer Polytechnic InstituteTroy, NY·4 Year·Rating 3.59 out of 5 1,109 reviewsJunior: RPI is a phenomenal school for fanatics of their job. If you burn with new ideas about engineering or tech, you will find a spot where you can take them to life. All you need to do is knock on some professor's doors and send some emails. Professors are more than happy to talk about their research and include you in it. Social life is what you make out of it. Too many people complain about it being boring or insulated. If you want to have friends and be social, there are more than enough people to do so. If you want to be afraid of the sun and be in your dorm all day, no one will stop you either. Just because it is a "tech school" you shouldn't turn down RPI for a "low social life". The Arch program is a bit messy in its current state, but there are rumors about changes to it which I hope to be true. As of now it is a good idea, but badly executed. Be ready to search for internships on your own but you will be more than ready for those that you get with RPI prep.... I have been fortunate to hold several campus jobs, including being a tour guide, tutor, and RA. I’ve appreciated the wide range of academic programs and the university's strong focus on research, which has allowed me to work alongside knowledgeable faculty. The campus life is very diverse, with over 300 clubs and organizations that have made my time here engaging and inclusive. The modern facilities, like advanced labs, libraries, and recreational centers, have greatly enhanced my academic and social experience. However, there are areas where I feel UB could improve. Large class sizes in some introductory courses can make it hard to get personalized attention. Parking is often a hassle due to limited spaces. Administrative processes can be slow, and the shuttle service between the North and South Campuses sometimes feels inconvenient. I made some really good friends and was able to connect with several of my professors. The only major critic I have of RIT, in regards to academics, is the speed that students are expected to pick up a skill-set. I was required to take two coding classes in my fall and spring semesters, and I had never coded ever. The classes were marketed as intro level but I routinely struggled with the concepts and labs, only to have to learn a new concept and topic the following week. Computer Science is required for my major but it made it very difficult even, at time, being more difficult that my math and engineering classes. 23. #21 Best Colleges in New YorkSUNY College of Environmental Science & ForestrySyracuse, NY·4 Year·Rating 3.66 out of 5 350 reviewsSophom*ore: SUNY ESF is awesome!! Academics are very high quality, and ESF has a reputation for this in the professional world. I would recommend ESF to any student that knows they want a career related to the environment—not only will you receive a top of the line education, you won't be put in massive debt getting it.ESF students by and large are at least a little weird, nerdy and geeky (think DnD sessions , bug hunting and stick and poke tattoos). If this sounds like you then you'll feel at home; and if it doesn't, you might find it isn't so bad. Though, if it really isn't you, you might struggle to feel like you fit in.One potential downside: you must be comfortable with no non-environmental degrees. While there are diverse environmental majors, if at some point you decide you'd prefer, say, psychology or computer science, you'd be out of luck.As a student that fits into the ESF niche, I'm very happy with my life here at ESF.
