Ingredients for Butterbeer co*cktail Recipe:

This ingredient list is fairly basic, but does call for some specialty items. Add to your liquor cabinet and watch how quickly this co*cktail is requested! Here is what you need:

  • Heavy Cream: Also called Heavy Whipping Cream, you can find this in the dairy section of your grocer. It’ll be next to the half and half or coffee creamers.
  • Butterscotch Schnapps: Added to the cream as it whips for an extra delicious flavor.
  • Vanilla Vodka: Specifically, whipped vodka. It’s the only time I like to purchase Pinnacle vodka. I promise this makes all the difference.
  • Butter Extract: You can find this next to the vanilla extract in the spice aisle of your grocer.
  • Cream Soda: One bottle. Preferably chilled.
  • Butterscotch Sauce: An optional topping, but so delicious. A jar can usually be found in the ice cream aisle, or you can make it yourself with this butterscotch recipe.

How to Make Boozy Butterbeer:

The secret to a perfect finish in this recipe is the boozy whipped topping! Don’t skip it!

  1. PREP: The whipped topping can be made in advance and stored in the fridge or freezer, up to a few hours. Start by placing your mixing bowl into the freezer for about 20 minutes to chill.
  2. WHIP: Add the heavy cream into your chilled mixing bowl. Beat with a whisk until soft peaks form, or just as it begins to thicken. Add the butterscotch liquor and whip for 3 to 5 minutes at high speed, or until fluffy. Watch closely to make sure it doesn’t begin to turn to butter. Set the whipped topping aside.
  3. co*ckTAIL: Divide the vodka and butter extract amounts into two chilled glasses. Optionally, you can add 1oz of butterscotch schnapps to each glass if you want a little extra kick.
  4. TOPPING: Top the drinks with cream soda and gently stir to combine. Add a dollop of butterscotch whipped cream and drizzle butterscotch sauce (if using) to taste. Enjoy!

Tips For This Adult Butterbeer co*cktail

Recipe Notes:

What flavor is butterbeer?

Butterbeer has a rich butterscotch taste, combined with a cream soda, and has an additional cream topping.

Is butterbeer a real drink?

Butterbeer was made famous by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Although there is a historical drink based on butter and beer, this drink more likely emerged from fiction, fan-mixologists, and fan-theme parks such as the famous Harry Potter World in Universal Studios, Orlando.

What is butterbeer made of?

In the Harry Potter series, butterbeer is a drink made from butterscotch, sugar, and water. We like to use cream soda and add the butterscotch. Our co*cktail version adds in vanilla vodka and butterscotch schnapps.

Can this be made in advance?

The butterbeer co*cktail should be consumed when made. However, all of the butterbeer ingredients, except the heavy cream will last for 6 months or more on their own.

Does butterscotch schnapps need to be refrigerated?

Butterscotch schnapps (on its own) does not need to be refrigerated. After you have opened the bottle, reseal and store in a cool, dry place, away from light. It should store indefinitely when stored correctly. However, schnapps will lose its flavor over time. If it develops a bad odor, it should be discarded.

Does vodka go bad if not refrigerated?

Vodka will stay good for 50 years plus if unopened. When opened, store in a cool, dry space away from light. There is enough alcohol content in vodka that it will store for decades without a problem.

This was not a bad drink at all!!! The rating is more to reflect the accuracy of the flavors. The drink does have butterscotch and vanilla (from the cream soda), but the butterscotch should be in the cream, not the liquid. My suggestion would be to mix the butterscotch schnapps (start with 1.5 oz then to taste) with the heavy cream after it is about 90% the way to nice peaks. Mix the vanilla vodka with the cream soda. Lightly stir the vodka and cream soda and top with boozy whipped topping. This will help to balance the flavor and be more accurate to the actual drink.
