What’s in an Old Fashioned Apple co*cktail?

A traditional Old Fashioned co*cktail is made by muddling sugar and bitters, mixing it with (bourbon) whiskey, and then adding citrus rind. To make this apple-infused fall version of the classic co*cktail, we are making a few changes. We are adding in apple cider and apple butter, plus finishing it off with a garnish of cinnamon to give it the final fall kick it needs.

FAQs

Is an Old Fashioned better with simple syrup or sugar cube? ›

Use Rich Simple Syrup

The sugar cube is one Old Fashioned tradition that can definitely be skipped. While many recipes call for it, it offers no advantage over using a rich simple syrup and has several disadvantages. Most obviously, you have to find and buy sugar cubes and a muddler.

How long should you stir an Old Fashioned for? ›

Mix the co*cktail: Place the bourbon, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters in a mixing glass. Add the ice and stir with a bar spoon for 10 to 15 seconds. Strain the co*cktail: Strain the co*cktail into a rocks glass over one large ice cube, or cubed ice.

Are Old Fashioned made with bourbon or rye? ›

Consequently, some traditionalists insist an Old-Fashioned should be made with rye, but bourbon is equally correct and the choice of whiskey should be entirely up to the personal taste of the drinker. Bourbon makes a mellow, slightly sweeter drink, while rye adds more spice and kick.

Is an Old Fashioned a strong drink? ›

How Strong Is the Old-Fashioned? The old-fashioned is definitely a strong drink. With little dilution and no significant mixer, it's not much lighter than a straight pour of whiskey. The alcohol content of an old-fashioned made with an 80-proof whiskey falls around 32 percent ABV (64 proof).

Are you supposed to muddle the orange in an Old Fashioned? ›

Some bartenders drop in a slice of orange or a cherry right before serving, and others will muddle the fruit into the drink; sometimes it's served with no fruit at all.

What can I substitute for simple syrup in Old Fashioned? ›

If you're looking for a simple syrup substitute, there are three favorites you probably have right in your home: honey, maple syrup and agave. For honey or agave, add warm water to them, to help turn the mix to syrup. You can also use a sweet, juicy fruit, like an orange.

What state drinks the most Old Fashioned? ›

The Birth of the Wisconsin Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned in Wisconsin requires three decisions. First, you choose your liquor, which is almost always brandy or, sometimes, whiskey. Then a soda: sweet, sour or a press (equal parts lemon-lime soda and club soda).

Is an Old Fashioned a man's drink? ›

The Old Fashioned co*cktail, served on the rocks, is one of the traditional manly co*cktails we can't ignore. Poured over ice, this legendary combination of sugar, water, angostura bitters and either bourbon or rye whiskey will give you those ultimate man-points.

How to order an Old Fashioned at a bar? ›

There's no wrong way to order an Old Fashioned, simply state what you want and how you want it. Start by saying the type of whisky you fancy, followed by any tweaks you want to make. It could be with a twist, an extra dash of bitters or syrup instead of sugar.

What kind of ice cube for Old Fashioned? ›

The right style of ice depends on the co*cktail. For spirit-forward drinks served in a rocks glass, like the Negroni or Old Fashioned, a single large block or sphere is ideal. For a tall drink like a highball or Tom Collins, or shorter drinks like a Tommy's Margarita, multiple smaller cubes work well.

What sugar is best for Old Fashioned? ›

The classic recipe, according to most mixologists, calls for Brown Demerara sugar cubes. Sugar cubes are previously measured, allowing for consistent whiskey to bitters ratios. The Angostura aromatic bitters have a rich scent of fruits and spices and are a necessary component of any classic Old Fashioned co*cktail.

Why use simple syrup instead of sugar? ›

Simple syrup is used to allow sugar to be evenly mixed throughout a drink, particularly one served cold, by pre-dissolving the granulated sugar in water ahead of time to avoid clumping. It's also one of the easiest ingredients to make yourself—if you can boil water, you can make simple syrup.

How to make sugar cube dissolve in Old Fashioned? ›

Instructions: Place sugar cube or simple syrup in an Old Fashioned glass. I prefer simple sugar over a sugar cube to ensure that all the sugar is dissolved. Add two splashes of bitters and, if using a sugar cube, 1 teaspoon of water to dissolve the sugar.
