Galvez Rum Festival planned

Galvez Tasting Rooms & Gardens, 1848 Charter St., Jackson,is celebrating its grand opening with an inaugural Galvez Rum Festival on April 27.

The festival will start at 11 a.m. with a few words from community leaders, followed by a lineup of bands with Southland Band, Jeffrey Broussard & the Creole Cowboys, Papo Y Son Mandao, and Dee Fleming & the Zydeco Train. The distillery will have limited rum-tasting spots throughout the day, and co*cktails will be served.

Food vendors and local restaurants will be available and accessible to festival patrons.

OLLI meeting April 17

OLLI Felicianas Chapter is having a Learn and Lunch at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 17 at the Pointe Coupee Parish Library, 201 Claiborne St., New Roads. A group will then meet for lunch at Morel’s Restaurant, 210 Morrison Pkwy., New Roads.

The topic is Travel With Me: Benenuto a Bergamo presented by Paul and Renee Major. No registration or fee is needed for the travel session and guests ages 50 and older are welcome.

Jackson clean up

On Saturday, April 20, a group of volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at Jackson Oaks Eatery to clean up Jackson during Love the Boot Week. Volunteers and groups are welcome to join.

Sprouting Into Spring

At 1 p.m., Monday, April 22, Audubon Regional Library Clinton,11023 Bank St., (225) 683-8753, will hold Sprouting Into Spring. The program will have tips about gardening and the history behind Earth Day. Participants will decorate a paper cup planter and plant a flower to celebrate Earth Day.

Learn about herbs

The Southern University Ag Center will hold its annual Spring Garden Workshop at 9 a.m., April 25, at the Maurice A. Edmond Livestock Arena Multi-Purpose Building, 14600 Scenic Highway, Baton Rouge.

The theme is “Earth Day, Herb Day: Down to Earth Herbs for Everyday Use.” Topics will include Herb Propagation, Herbs for IPM, Feeding Herbs to Livestock and Traditional Uses of Herbs and more

Spring Angola Rodeo tickets for sale

The spring Angola Prison Rodeo is April 20-21. The gates open at 8 a.m. for hobby crafts and festivities, and the “Wildest Show in the South” starts at 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 and all seats are reserved. No craft-only tickets available.

Bands, food and prisoner-made arts and crafts, including jewelry, leathercrafts, paintings, woodworking, lawn and garden furniture, and toys are available. Children can participate in pony rides, carnival games, an antique carousel and more.

Walker Percy Weekend tickets on sale

At the ninth annual Walker Percy Weekend in St. Francisville, May 31-June 1, presenters and panelists will explore how Percy, and the writers he inspired, explore where Southern fiction has been and where it is going. Buy tickets at bontempstix.com/events/the-2024-walker-percy-weekend-5-31-2024.

Chamber lunch sessions set

The East Feliciana Parish Chamber of Commerce is hosting lunchtime meetings each starting at 11:30 a.m.

The next luncheon is April 24 at The Green Door at H Mercantile in Clinton. It will be a brief overview of what the insurance industry is doing with a question-and-answer forum by Will Andrews, of Dart Insurance, and Clay Pinson, of Record Insurance. Lunch will be prepared by Carter's Home Cooking.

  • Audubon Day 2024 at LSU Hill Memorial Library, 95 Field House Drive, is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27. The library holds an annual viewing of the famed double elephant folio edition of John James Audubon’s Birds of America (London, 1827-1838).
