Boron Deficiency in Cauliflower | U.S. Borax? ›

The most common symptom of boron deficiency in cauliflower in the field are poor and discolored curd formation, which frequently renders the crop unsuitable for marketing. The pith is especially liable to develop water-soaked areas, and to become necrotic and ultimately hollow.

While borax in large doses kills unwanted plants, in small doses it can be a soil booster – especially in sandy soils that may be mineral deficient. A large vegetable garden of 1,000 square feet can safely benefit from 6 to 7 tablespoons of borax mixed in at tilling, either directly or diluted in water.

Management: Soils deficient in boron can be amended with boron fertilizer such as Borax, boric acid, and Solubor, based on soil tests and crop requirements. In high pH soils, foliar applications are preferred. Once symptoms of boron deficiency are observed, it is usually too late to apply boron.

You may think that applying boric acid directly to the soil would be the best way to fix boron deficiency. But boric acid actually has a greater potential to cause plant toxicity compared to other B sources.

As borax can last for 3 years in the soil and is somewhat harmful to aquatic life (you wouldn't want to just flush it away), the best thing to do would be to remove the soil and dispose of it in the garbage, as toxic waste at a garbage center or spread it extremely thinly over a large area if you have acreage.

Borax can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if you ingest it by itself, and large amounts can lead to shock and kidney failure. It's banned in U.S. food products. It also can irritate your skin and eyes, and it can hurt your nose, throat, and lungs if you breathe it in.

Hard water prevents laundry detergent from working as it should leaving your clothes gray and dingy. Since borax contains sodium,3 adding 1/2 cup per load helps soften the wash water so your clothes look great.

Several boron fertilizers are available. Ulexite is recommended, as the sodium borate provides immediate uptake, and the calcium borate provides longer term availability.

Flushing the growing medium with pH water and nutrients are recommended for boron deficiencies. Older leaves with substantial damage will not recover. Watch the plants for a few days to make certain new growth appears. This growth signifies the boron deficiency has been treated successfully.

Worm castings are a rich source of both zinc and boron. The castings can be used as a starter amendment and/or use a tea for foliar applications. Zinc deficiency is often found in alkaline soils and under these conditions sulfur can be very useful.

Boron is available on the market in a number of different compounds. Since the amount of boron contained in each compound is different, the concentration will determine the rate required per acre. Frequently, all of these boron-containing compounds are erroneously referred to as borax (11.36 percent boron).

Borax contains boron, an essential plant micronutrient. However, the difference between plant requirements and toxicity problems is very small. When excessive quantities are present, boron can damage and even destroy plants.
