Chess notation is the "language" we use to note our chess moves. Say a4- it means move the pawn on the a file to a4. B= bishop K=king N=knight Q=queen R=rook- by the way payn is NOT P it simply has no symbol just put the square its moving too. x means takes a piece. For example Bxd4 means the bishop toook the piece on d4. There are several chess columns-they are letters a-h. For Example, a4-the piece on a4-d7-the piece on d7. There are also several rows which are numbers 1-8. By the way, + means check, ++ means double check, and # means checkmate. The symbol for king side castling is O-O and queen side castling (is different thank king side- it is O-O-O. Here is an example of one move:

a subquestion is itlegal to use other language notation if I enter an english tournament in the US or else where.

I use S for knight in denmark springer N

and T for Rook tårn opposed to R

and L for bishop løber opposed to B

and D for queen dronning opposed to D

and K for king. konge opposed to K

or will it be illegal notation.

I'm not sure but probably regular notation is only allowed- I'm not 100% sure

I just looked in the danish chess book(book of rules) , it says to use danish notation. but if a player is from another country he is alloud to use his notation.

in the example a french player is allowed to write F for bishop.

E3: Hver spiller kan som det første bogstav anvende dét som normalt anvendes i

spillerens land. For eksempel: F=fou (fransk for løber), B=bishop (engelsk for

løber)

fide has the same section in the fide rules. So I am allowed to use Danish notation.

C.3 For the first letter of the name of the pieces, each player is free to use the first letter of the name which is commonly used in his country. Examples: F=fou (French for bishop), L=loper (Dutch for bishop). In printed periodicals, the use of figurines for the pieces is recommended.

as of first of april A.Fdecided that only figurines are alloud in tournament to make chess notation truly global. anybody can draw.

so no longer N for knight or S for knight in Denmark ...you can draw a knight.

you can practice how todrawchess figurines here. http://www.enpassant.dk/chess/fontimg/alpha.htm

the chess group A F decided it.

you don't learn anything from learning the notation other than doing just that.

it is a nessesary part of reading chessbooks or going to tournaments.

maybe if you want to remember moves inan opening it is easier to remember e4 c6 d4 d5 Nc3 dxe.

rather than just to recalling/imagine it without any form of notation.

happy april fools day

thanks, yes in Denmark we have April Fools day. it is called "Aprilsnar".

all official newspapers and TV stations may send news that are made up.

for example one year a scientist "discovered" that you could receive Satellite TV using a frying pan covered with aaluminum foil andconnecting it toa antenna cable.

even if this sound pretty obvious the sale of aluminum foil increased.

I guess most ofeurope has it in Germanythey say April April if someone is fooled.

I don't know, but a lot of people seem to use German notation... d for queen and stuff.
