I consider a trip to Trader Joe’s “me time” more than an errand. It’s the errand I actually want to go on and will plan a whole day around to stroll the aisles perusing all the new snacks, easy meal hacks, and of course, the bakery goodies.

Being gluten-free, there aren’t always a ton of new options for me. But over the weekend my Instagram feed was filled with fans raving about the new Trader Joe’s Glazed Chocolate Donut Holes—to the point that everyone was in fear of these selling out fast. The best news for me? They’re gluten-free and dairy-free. I hopped in the car immediately and got to my local store to try them ASAP.

Luckily, my store was still plenty stocked with packages of about 20 chocolate cake-like donut holes covered in a classic glaze. My biggest worry with all gluten-free baked goods is that they will be too hard, dense, crumbly, and just flat out dry. I tried poking the donut holes through the package to see if that would be the case with these, but couldn’t get a good sense for the texture and decided at just $3.49 for a package, I better just go ahead and buy three packages to be safe.

I barely made it out of the store before ripping into the package and biting into one of the donuts. To my surprise, they were perfectly tender and moist with a good chocolate cake flavor and just enough sweetness from the glaze coating the entire outside of each donut. I was truly shocked at just how good they were–they tasted like “real” donut holes! The fact that they are gluten- and dairy-free is just a bonus.

I ate half of the package before I even got home, and it seems I’m not alone. In a review on Instagram, @goodglutenfreegrub claims these donuts are a “10 out of 10” and says, “we are going to eat these in one sitting.” A commenter on the post chimed in, “I ate a whole package on the 15 minute ride home from Trader Joe’s.” Relatable.

Fans across social media and Reddit are comparing the taste and texture to Tim Horton’s Timbits and Dunkin’s Munchkins. One Reddit user explains, “Taste-wise a pretty standard donut hole, compared to Dunkin they’re smaller and have a slightly thicker glaze, and maybe a little less fluffy but only negligibly,” following the description up by claiming they’re “one of those things you can’t even tell is gluten-free + dairy-free.”

They’re also being compared to Katz's gluten-free donut offerings, but the big win for gluten-free eaters is that the Trader Joe’s version comes fresh and ready-to-eat instead of being frozen. But if you want to make sure you have plenty around long after they sell out (which will surely be soon) you can always do what I did and stash some in your freezer for later.
