Homemade Non-Toxic Lip Balm (2)

Non-Toxic Lip Balm.

I’m the first to admit that I’m not a girly-girl. When it comes to skin care, my routine is to wash my face with water before bed at night. I don’t wear any makeup or paint my nails or anything else.

So when it comes to things like lip balm, you better believe I’m not spending any money on fancy froo-froo flavors or whatever. And if I do ever use lip balm it’s 100% as plain Jane as I can find it.‘Cause while I’m not into makeup, I do understand that every now and again your skin needs a little extra TLC. Especially in the winter… And I want that TLC to be as non-toxic as possible.

And you can’t get much plainer or non-toxic than making your own. And extra bonus – it doesn’t cost an extra arm and/or a leg like most of the clean skin-care products out there on the inter webs.

Homemade Lip Balm.

Even though I wouldn’t recommend eating it, the slightly spicy, warm and comforting smell of this honey cinnamon lip balm is definitely delicious. It’s been a huge hit with friends I’ve gifted it to, as well as with my own daughters.

Homemade lip balm is not hard to make. Just melt some beeswax, shea butter, and oils over medium-low heat, then adding in whatever extra ingredients you want. I like adding in honey and essential oils or extracts. Just remember to choose essential oils that aren’t super hot (see note below in recipe card for more info on add-ins!).

If you have a double-boiler, that’s helpful, but I usually melt my ingredients in an oven-safe bowl placed over a pot of simmering water. It’s easy and cheap and I don’t have to keep extra kitchen gadgets lying around.

Once the mixture is melted and your extras are added in, pour the mixture into lip balm tubes (like these tubes) or small make-up containers with lids. Remember to cool completely before using.

More DIY Goodness.

Looking for more homemade skin-care/health products? I’m not an avid DIY-er, but I do try to make my household as non-toxic as possible. Here are some other recipe you might want to try if you’re in the same boat:

Ingredients

For the base:

Optional add-ins:

  • 6-10 drops essential oil, depending on the heat*
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon extract

Instructions

In a small saucepan, bring about a pint of water to simmer over medium heat. Place an oven-safe bowl over the saucepan, making a double boiler.

Add beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil, and apricot oil to the bowl and heat until beeswax melts, stirring every now and again.

When the beeswax is melted, remove the bowl from the heat and stir in honey and essential oil.

Pour into lip balm tubes or little make-up containers.

Let cool before use.

Note

Essential oils: Peppermint, coffee, sweet orange, andlemonare fun essential oils to add, but you can add floral flavors like lavender, geranium, and rose as well.

If you’re adding in essential oils, please remember that they are very concentrated, so you only need a few drops! If you’re not used to essential oils, it’s always a good idea to dilute some and test it on your skin first, just to make sure you don’t have a negative reaction.
