He fought valiantly every step of the way and continued to battle until his last breath. He passed away at home surrounded by his loving family.

Brian is survived by his wife of 26 years, Sherri, his daughter, Robin, and his son, Brad. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara, and brother, Donald along with his nephew, Jacob, and niece, Lilah.

Brian graduated from New Rochelle High School in New York. Rather than moving away, he decided to remain close to his family and attend Adelphi University where he graduated Cum Laude from their Pre-Med program. He then decided to attend Yale Medical School; he would later go on to become board-certified in both pediatrics and ophthalmology. He paused his medical training during the Vietnam War to enlist in the Public Health Service, where he would eventually earn the rank of Commander in the Coast Guard. Brian has been on staff at a multitude of hospitals; his experience includes being the Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology at: Eastern State School and Hospital, Woodhaven School and Hospital, Temple University School of Medicine, and Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. He was a consultant in pediatrics and member of the Ophthalmologic Staff at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and Montgomery Hospital & Sacred Heart Hospitals. Brian has numerous published works accredited to his name; amongst them is his pioneering research in diagnosing fetal alcohol syndrome.

Dr. Altman is remembered fondly by his patients for his warm demeanor and special ability to make his office more inviting for children. He loved seeing patients in his office, but he had a true passion for the operating room. Amongst his colleagues, Dr. Altman is remembered for being a world-class diagnostician and surgeon.

Brian, when he moved to South Jersey, operated out of offices in Rio Grande, Cape May Courthouse, and Ocean City. When he was not working, he loved spending time with his children (“Kingie and Queenie”), going out fishing on his boat (aptly named, “The Eye Dock,”) or spending time with “Sher.” When he was younger, he spawned a fascination of numismatics and continued to cultivate that passion late into his life.

Funeral services will be held 1pm Sunday April 14th at Beth Judah Temple in Wildwood, New Jersey. Donations in his honor may be made out to Doctors Without Borders. P.O. Box 5030 Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030 Doctorswithoutborders.org Condolences may be sent to ingersollgreenwoodfh.com

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The author should be someone who knew the person well and can provide an accurate and heartfelt tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or hobbies. You may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise yet meaningful, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph. Aim for 100-200 words at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload one or more photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text, along with payment information (if applicable) and any necessary documentation.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost varies depending on the newspaper and its circulation area. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a basic listing. Some papers may offer package deals or discounts for longer notices.

Can I publish an obituary online for free?

Yes, there are several online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary at no cost. These may include funeral home websites, social media groups dedicated to obituaries, or online memorials like Legacy.com or Tributes.com.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline depends on the newspaper's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms usually publish immediately after submission. For print newspapers, expect a delay of 1-5 days before publication.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made once an obituary is published in print. However, online platforms may allow you to make edits or corrections within a certain timeframe.

What if I need to correct an error in the obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible. They will guide you through their correction process and make any necessary changes.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately. Consider sharing it with loved ones or storing it with your important documents.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites like Ancestry.com, or visit local libraries with microfilm collections. Funeral homes may also keep records of past services and obituaries.

What is an "in memoriam" notice?

An "in memoriam" notice is a paid announcement that commemorates the anniversary of someone's passing or birthday. It's often used to honor loved ones who have passed away and keep their memory alive.

Should I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

If the deceased had a favorite charity or cause, consider including this information in the obituary. It allows friends and family to make donations in their name as a meaningful tribute.

Yes! Online platforms like digital legacy websites or social media groups allow you to collect memories, stories, and photos into a digital archive that can be shared with others.

How do I handle condolences from people I don't know well?

Acknowledge their kind words with a simple "thank you" or response expressing gratitude for their sympathy. You're not obligated to engage in lengthy conversations or respond individually to every message.

What if I'm overwhelmed by condolences and messages?

It's okay to set boundaries during this difficult time. Consider designating a point person to manage condolences on your behalf or taking breaks from social media and messaging apps.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

This depends on the original publication's policies. Check with them first before republishing elsewhere. Online platforms may allow republication without restrictions.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an LGBTQ+ inclusive obituary?
