Are you the kind of person who likes “adukki perukkal” (organising things)? I've seen many people who consider “adukki perukku” as a hobby and that includes my husband! You know what… it can be a pretty annoying hobby at times, not for the person who does it, but for poor souls like me who don't enjoy the process very much. Normally I've seen the opposite, I mean it's the ladies in the house who enjoys it and complains about the valichu variyidal (messing up) by the man of the house.

I think I should make something clear…. I'm not a messy person but at the same time I don't have an OCD of organising things every now and then. I'm ok with some books and papers lying around here and there ;) There is nothing wrong with “adukki perukkal”, as long as you enjoy practicing the hobby by yourself, without any company, you know what I mean, right ;)

But I've to admit one thing, all this organising has some benefits too.. this Spicy Mutton Curry is the result of one such activity. Since there was some maintenance work to be done in the kitchen, I had to rearrange my cookery books. I rediscovered some cookery books and magazines. The photo of this recipe caught my attention at once and I decided to try it. I should say that the recipe compensated for the not so enjoyable part of rearranging the books.

Btw, are you a fan of Samvrutha Sunil, the Malayalam film actress? If so, there is one more reason to try this recipe. She shared this in one of the earlier issues of Vanitha Pachakam. I've given the quantity of ingredients based on my experiment and I've made some changes in the procedure, but the basic format of the recipe is same as hers. It's a very spicy recipe loaded with flavour, that goes well with pulao, roti, appam, paratha etc; I do hope you will also enjoy this spicy treat.

Here are the step by step pictures..

Heat oil in a pan and add coconut, whole coriander, dry red chilli, whole black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, pearl onion, fennel seeds, curry leaves. Fry till the coconut turns golden brown. Remove from fire and let it cool. Grind the same without adding water. Keep it aside…

Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add sliced onions. When it turns golden brown, add ginger and garlic. Cook till the raw smell goes, around 2-4 mins…

Add cleaned mutton pieces and mix well. Add 2 cups of hot water and pressure cook till the mutton is done…

Course: Side Dish

Total Time: 40 minutes minutes

Author: Maria Jose

Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg Mutton (cut into medium size pieces)

To roast and grind

  • 3/4 cup Grated Coconut
  • 1 tbsp Whole coriander seeds
  • 4 Dry red chilli
  • 1 1/4 tsp Whole black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Fennel seeds
  • A small piece Cinnamon
  • 3 Pearl / Small onion (sliced)
  • 6 Curry leaves

For masala

  • 3 med – big Onion (sliced)
  • 1.5 tsp Crushed / grated ginger and garlic (each)
  • 1 tsp Chilli powder
  • 1 med – big Tomato (sliced)
  • Salt
  • Oil (I used coconut oil)

To temper

  • 4 Pearl / small onion (sliced)
  • Curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper powder (refer notes)
  • 1 tbsp Chopped coriander leaves

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a pan and add coconut, whole coriander, dry red chilli, whole black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, pearl onion, fennel seeds, curry leaves. Fry till the coconut turns golden brown. Remove from fire and let it cool. Grind the same without adding water. Keep it aside.

  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add sliced onions. When it turns golden brown, add ginger and garlic. Cook till the raw smell goes, around 2-4 mins. Add chilli powder and cook for 2-3 mins. Add sliced tomato, salt and cook till it turns soft. Add cleaned mutton pieces and mix well. Add 2 cups of hot water and pressure cook till the mutton is done. Refer notes to see on pressure cooking time.

  • Add 1/4 – 1/2 cup of hot water to the ground masala. Mix well. Add it to the cooked mutton and cook on low flame for 5-10 mins. Remove from fire.

  • Heat oil in a pan and add sliced pearl/small onion and curry leaves. Fry till the onions turn golden brown. Switch off the gas and add pepper powder and coriander leaves. Add this to the curry and mix well.

  • Serve hot with rice/chapthi/pathiri etc;

Notes

This is a spicy recipe, so adjust the qty of spices to suit your taste.

I didnt add the pepper powder in the tempering stage, since the curry was already spicy for our preference.

Pressure cooking the mutton – After the first whistle, I reduced the flame to low-medium and cooked for 12-15 whistles. Keep it closed for another 15 mins or till the pressure drops.

The colour of the curry tends to darken as it rests..

  1. Hey hey :)
Successfully managed to make the spicy Kerala mutton curry ..thanks to you.
Just a humble feedback, the grind list doesn’t show cloves in the list, however in the instructions there seem to be cloves mentioned. Wasn’t sure so I added it anyway ….was yummy yummy :) thanks so much for all your recipes and keep going ?

  2. Yummy.. yummy recipe.. here’s something I tried.. I saved extra ground masala in a container & used it the next time. I made this curry…! So, I started preparing this masala & preserving it in a glass bottle (5-6 months shelf life comfortably) & use as needed… it’s much easier & saves a lot of time!

    • Thank you very much Sumi :) It’s a wonderful idea to store the extra masala, saves you time. Thanks a lot for sharing that tip here, appreciate it very much!

  5. Hi Maria,

I was a silent reader of your blog for the past 3 years. I have tried many of your recipes. I used this recipe for my ifthar party this week, and it came out really good. So i couldn’t resist myself from informing you this.

I don’t want to be a a person who enjoys the good food, but never appreciates the work behind that. I don’t understand why people find it so difficult to say the food was good if it was good. Let all the ego masks fall off.

Many thanks dear. Keep up your good work.

    God Bless..

  9. Dear maria chechi Even after 15 whistles in the pressure cooker there was a lot of curry, also mutton wasn’t all that cooked. What should I do?

    Reply

    • Hi Parvathy,

Sometimes the mutton takes longer to cook. In that case, you need to cook it again. Even after pressure cooking twice, you are left with too much gravy, cook the curry without the lid on low-medium flame, till the gravy thickens.

Make sure you stir the curry in between, otherwise it may stick to the bottom.

      Cheers
      Maria

  10. You forgot to add salt! I just blindly followed your steps and missed out the salt :( My curry is in the cooker now. I will add salt once I open it (I dunno my mutton will absorb the salt or not :( ) Well I am in Bahrain too. If its not good, I am going to have dinner together with Josettan and you tonight with the mutton curry. If its ok, I am going to have the yummy curry alone as usual. You absolutely have no clue how much you help me daily to add on my weight and I cant help myself trying out your recipes. (I am a bachelor sharing my flat with two Kerala families. Now those husbands asked chechis to learn cooking from me, I am not going to tell them about the secret, your blog) Love your recipes. Josettan must be a real lucky guy!

    • Hi Jofz

Yeah I did! Thanks for pointing it out, I’ve edited the recipe :) Since you didnt come this side with mutton curry, I do hope it came out well ;)

Good to know that you are giving a competition to chechis ;)

I’m not sure whether Josettan agrees with your “lucky” comment, however I’ll def pass this to him.

Keep trying more recipes from here and happy cooking!
