What is S1, S2, and S3 on a safety shoe? ›

S2 - S2 footwear has all the aspects of S1 footwear, but adds prevention of water absorption for the upper. Again, codes can be added as they are with S1 and SB. S3 - You will find the same safety elements as contained in S2, plus a penetration resistant midsole.

S1 = As well as the basic toe protection, S1 will ensure that footwear has anti-static protection, is resistant to fuel oil and has energy absorption in the heel. S2 = These have all the same protection as S1, plus the added protection of preventing water penetration and absorption of the uppers.

The standard for safety shoes EN ISO 20345: 2012 will be updated and will now instead be EN ISO 20345:2022. If you do not need a water repellent upper part on your shoe, then you do not need a S3 safety shoe, and a S1P safety rated shoe will be enough.
