Scream 7 Will Bring Back Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers (2024)
Whatever the seventh Scream film was going to be or is now, there was always at least one likely scenario: Courteney Cox had to come back. Cox is the lone original cast member to appear in each of the latest films and, since she narrowly survived the last one, we all expected she’d return.
Now, Variety confirms that the Friends mega-star is in talks to reprise her role as Gale Weathers, the newswoman turned author who has been key to the entire Scream franchise. Cox will appear alongside Neve Campbell who, earlier this month, announced that she’d be returning to the franchise after sitting the last installment out. One of Scream’s original creators, Kevin Williamson, is directing.
And while it would be easy to just be happy about Cox’s return, almost everything about this film has a cloud of uncertainty over it. That first stemmed from the production company, Spyglass, firing Scream 5 and 6 star Melissa Barrera over comments advocating for Palestine on social media. A new report just this week then shined additional light on that with the news Radio Silence, the directing and producing team behind both of those films, was also unceremoniously “exited,” purportedly over scheduling conflicts. So even if Scream 7 is as excellent as we all want it to be, there will always be the question of “What if?”
Nevertheless, Cox returning is good news because she’s now one of two survivors from the original film, along with Campbell’s Sidney. Whatever Williamson has in store would almost have to account for both women being around.
Scream 7 does not yet have a release date but we’d imagine it’ll be sometime in early 2025.

Scream 7 will feature Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers returning to recapture the magic of the original characters. Gale was largely sidelined in Scream 6, leading to disappointment among fans, missing a larger role for her in the film.
Gale is attacked by Ghostface, but is saved by Dewey. She survives the climax in the Hollywood home of John Milton. At the end, Dewey asks Gale to marry him, which she accepts.
While almost every entry along the way tied back into the long-running story of Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott, not even she can say that she was a part of them all. Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers stands as the lone character in the Scream franchise who has actually appeared in every single entry.
Gale Weathers is an ambitious reporter hoping to strike it famous and rich, despite being stuck as a local news reporter in the little town of Woodsboro.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! David Arquette is opening up about the next Scream movie. The 52-year-old actor addressed the fate of Dewey Riley in Scream 7.
With the movie shooting in late 2024, the earliest it could arrive in theaters is late 2025 or early 2026. Scream 7 is confirmed to be in development. The news came with the announcement that the franchise would see a change in directors.
Gale does not marry anyone in The Hunger Games. He and Katniss talk about running away together and starting a new life in the wilderness, but they never officially marry.
Whereas Sidney Prescott makes every best final girl list, and deservedly so, Gale Weathers rarely does, though her character makes such a significant impact that she's the only legacy character to be a part of every Scream sequel since.
Gale Weathers is nearly killed by Quinn Bailey. After killing Brooks, Quinn started chasing Gale around her apartment. After sometime, Quinn managed to stab Gale few times in the stomach and chest. Chad Meeks-Martin is nearly killed by Ethan Landry and Quinn Bailey.
However, when she first arrives on the set of Woodsboro's latest Ghostface murder scene, she introduces herself as "Gale Ril-," shakes her head, and then says, "Gale Weathers." Sadly, this means that the distance between them and the wildly different career paths (and schedules) led Gale and Dewy to divorce.
For a little while, it seems like Ghostface has succeeded in killing another character in Scream 6. Sam and Tara are scared, horrified, and worried that Gale is gone. Thankfully, Gale survives, although of course now she has even more trauma to work through after dealing with Ghostface yet another time.
