Frequently Asked Questions about our Certification Program
How rigorous is the testing process?Dave Morrissey2017-12-21T10:46:59+00:00
How rigorous is the testing process?
We pride ourselves in being the foremost authority in identifying products that are safer and healthier for people affected by asthma and allergies, and we take that responsibility very seriously. Unlike some “Seal of Approvals,” we do not accept paper-based evaluations of manufacturer data. Each standard is written and approved by a medical and scientific advisory committee using best-in-class data. We require each product to be tested at an independent approved laboratory facility in compliance with the relevant standard in that product category. Testing takes approximately 12 weeks and involves the use of climate-controlled chambers using live biological agents by a team of scientists. Aside from the allergen and chemical testing, we also take into consideration other factors that are important to consumers, such as comfort physiology and physical performance to ensure it can withstand the necessary cleaning recommendations.
What is the cost for Certification?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
What is the cost for Certification?
First, there is a cost to have the product tested to determine its eligibility for Certification. The testing costs vary for each type of product and the testing that the relevant standard requires. If the product successfully passes testing, the brand then enters into a Licensing Agreement with us and pays an annual fee. The annual fee covers usage rights of the asthma & allergy friendly®® logo, marketing and PR, and many other benefits. The annual fee is determined by the size of the company, geographic territory, the product’s estimated net sales. We are happy to provide you with a quote.
How long does the Certification Process take?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
How long does the Certification Process take?
The process timeline varies depending on the type of product/service being tested. On average, the product testing phase usually takes about 12 weeks. From start to finish, the total application and certification process takes 5 months.
I don’t see my type of product listed in the standard categories. How can I obtain certification?ionology2017-12-21T10:52:25+00:00
I don’t see my type of product listed in the standard categories. How can I obtain certification?
Please contact us with more information for specific requests about new standard development. Allergy Standards is an international standards body that develops standards for testing a wide range of products to determine their suitability. If our medical and advisory committee agrees that a new standard area would provide a benefit to asthmatics and individuals with associated allergies, we will develop a new standard for testing in that particular area. New standard development is a longer process and Certification for a new standard usually takes around 9 months from start to finish. We recently released a new standard for Whole Home Air Cleaners and Cabin Air Filters.
How long will my product be certified?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
How long will my product be certified?
Certification runs for as long as the Certification contract is valid, subject to audit and compliance reviews to ensure that each product remains eligible for Certification.
Are there any restrictions on how I can use the logo or promote the product?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
Are there any restrictions on how I can use the logo or promote the product?
All brands must comply with the standard terms and conditions of our Brand Manual and Licensing Agreement, which will also specify which countries/geographies are approved. As long as these legal requirements are met, we strongly encourage brands to use the certification mark on your packaging, digital assets, and also through distributors and retail stores. We can even provide guidance, advice, consultation, and support to help you use Certification effectively, educate retailers or distributors, and transform your digital landscape.
Are you exclusive in any certification category?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
Are you exclusive in any certification category?
No. As a registered Certification Mark, we offer certification for all products that meet the relevant testing standards. By identifying multiple products in each category, we help people affected by asthma and allergies to make informed decisions to choose a product that is right for them.
Once testing and licensing is finalised, are there any ongoing testing fees?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
Once testing and licensing is finalised, are there any ongoing testing fees?
No, but we do reserve the right to inspect products to ensure compliance to the relevant certification standard. From time to time, we will announce amendments to existing standards to ensure that they remain up-to-date with the latest technologies and data. This may require all products in that certification category to pass an additional set of tests to ensure that they are compliant with the updated standard. However, this will be communicated to each company in advance with necessary lead time to make any required changes to the product. We also require that companies notify us if there are any changes to the product formulations or manufacturing environment.
How are you different from ‘eco-friendly’ and ‘sustainability’ Certifications?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
How are you different from ‘eco-friendly’ and ‘sustainability’ Certifications?
Unlike other certification marks that look at other areas such as energy efficiency and environmental protection (which are all great things!), we focus solely on a product’s impact to human health. Consumer trend analyses show that people are growing more concerned about what’s better for their health, their family, and their home and not just sustainability and eco-focused. Independent studies of our Certification Mark show that it is an important addition to a portfolio of CSR initiatives and helps contribute to brand strength, trust, and social consciousness.
How are you different from other human-health Certifications?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
How are you different from other human-health Certifications?
Our Certification has been around for over 12 years and is used worldwide to signify that products have met our standard criteria. The strength of our program relies on best-in-class test methods and assurance that each product has been evaluated for efficacy and impact on asthma, allergies, and the home environment before permitting usage of the Certification Mark, as opposed to relying on manufacturer’s data or testing reports (which can often be inaccurately reported or tested in facilities that are not properly vetted).
What’s different about products that are Certified asthma & allergy friendly®?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
Certified products are better choices for everyone – not just people with asthma or allergies. In order to be certified, products must show an added benefit and score in the top percentile of the relevant standard criteria to demonstrate their effectiveness, therefore ensuring that they contribute toward a healthier home environment, such as improving air quality or limiting exposure to toxic chemicals.
Why is a Certification Mark needed in this area and can Certification help manufacturers and retailers with allergy claim validation?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
Why is a Certification Mark needed in this area and can Certification help manufacturers and retailers with allergy claim validation?
For years, physicians, allergists, and immunologists have recommended that in addition to medicinal treatment, patients should purchase products that will reduce triggers in their home environment to help control symptoms. However, the marketplace is full of misleading claims on product packaging, making it difficult for consumers to choose products that are better choices. The FDA does not govern use of the term ‘hypoallergenic,’ and there are no federal standards in this area to protect consumers. Therefore, we created this Certification Program not just to help consumers identify products, but also to help manufacturers validate their allergy-related marketing claims through 3rd party scientific evaluation of product performance.
How big is this problem? How many people are affected by asthma and allergies?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
How big is this problem? How many people are affected by asthma and allergies?
About 50 million Americans suffer from allergies, and 26 million Americans suffer from asthma. Asthma alone is the #1 cause of school absenteeism and #1 cause of ER visits among children, contributing to the healthcare cost burden from doctor’s visits, ER visits, and hospitalisations. This problem is worsening by the decade; and there has been a 100% increase in asthma and allergy prevalence over the past 30 years. Now, asthma and allergies are considered a Top 5 Hazard to Human Health Worldwide!
What happens if a product fails testing?ionology2017-12-14T11:21:04+00:00
What happens if a product fails testing?
Products that do not meet our standard criteria are not eligible for certification. About 15% of products do not meet our standards after testing, but many more voluntarily choose not to move forward with testing after becoming more familiar with the rigor of our standards. Before submitting a product for testing, you may speak with our Senior Scientific Officer to have all of your questions answered, discuss prior testing results that you have done, and get a better idea of what to expect during the testing journey. If the testing process signals a negative outcome, our research partners can work with you on an R&D/consultancy basis to help improve product performance and address the issues. This has often led to innovative product breakthroughs for our partners! Once a product passes testing, we encourage you to use the results as a platform to inform your target consumer and separate you from the competition! We are happy to support you in marketing and PR efforts, and can create awareness with our key demographic: consumers affected by asthma and allergies. Additionally, we will provide you with the full scientific test report and can also prepare informative scientific videos and curated content to help simplify the testing process and tell the story of your journey toward certification.
