Founded in 1906

The College was originally chartered in 1906 as the first postsecondary, two-year college in New York. In 1987, the State University of New York’s Board of Trustees authorized the college's present designation as State University of New York College of Technology at Canton, more commonly known as SUNY Canton.

Areas of study fall into one of three unique schools:

All academic programs are designed in a ladder curriculum, meaning students who start in a certificate or associate program can apply their first years of study toward their associate or bachelor’s degree.

SUNY Canton OnLine features more than 450 online courses and 23 degrees are available online, allowing students to enroll from anywhere with Internet access.

Student Enrollment

  • During Fall 2023, there were 2,900 undergraduate students
  • Student legal sex is 56% female, 44% male
  • Diverse mix of races, ethnicities and backgrounds represented in the student body, adding for a unique and rich cultural learning experience
  • International students from Canada, Cameroon, United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, Australia, Czech Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Japan, South Korea, and Sri Lanka.

Faculty

The College’s faculty members are noted for their professional real-world experience in addition to their academic credentials. Students learn from engineers; crime scene investigators and former police officers; nurses and doctors; lawyers and entrepreneurs; programmers; in addition to novelists, photographers and videographers. The student to faculty ratio is 17 to 1.

Athletics

The college’s 15 traditional athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division III levelas part of theNorth Atlantic Conference. SUNY Canton also offers varsity esports and cheerleading.

Esports

SUNY Canton's Esports teams offer students a chance to participate in video game competitions at the collegiate level.Options include varsity and intramural matches. The College currently participates in League of Legends,Overwatch,Rocket League, andSuper Smash Bros Ultimate, Valorant. Additional games and teams are added regularly. SUNY Canton is the first college in New York to join the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE)and competes in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)and SUNY Esports League.

The Kangaroo

In 2007, SUNY Canton adopted the Kangaroos as its nickname, logo and mascot. The marsupial can only move forward, reflecting the College’s progress and mission. The athletic teams are often called “Roos” and the athletic building is nicknamed “Roos house.” The mascot’s name is Roody Roo.

About the Campus

SUNY Canton is comprised of 555 acres located in a scenic, semi-rural setting bordering the Grasse River and within walking distance of downtown Canton.

Twenty buildings fit perfectly into the surrounding landscape, including:

  • Five classroom buildings with specialized labs for innovative hands-on learning
  • Five residential buildings, including Kennedy Hall, offering students single-rooms in apartment-style suites
  • The Convocation Athletic and Recreation Center features an ice rink, pool, fitness center, and field house
  • The Southworth Learning Commons, serves as the technological center and research hub of campus
  • The Richard W. Miller Campus Center offering recreational and student access space for clubs and organizations
  • Miles of beautiful trails suitable for walking, running, biking or skiing surround the campus
  • Two scenic footbridges connect the campus with the Village of Canton
