Were you aware that when it comes to desserts, there are some rules and etiquettes to follow?

We can all agree that most of us are unaware that there are basic etiquette rules to follow when eating a simple dessert. We never considered that a sweet dish on a plate in front of us should be eaten in a specific manner. We simply enjoyed it as we please. The way you consume a dessert is mostly determined by its texture and type.

Here are some guidelines to follow in order to fully appreciate that delicious treat:

Cakes:

A moist cake with a chocolate filling, custards, or anything made of cream is meant to be eaten with a fork. When eating ice cream cake, use a spoon and a fork. (Always remember to put the fork on the left and the spoon on the right) A cupcake, on the other hand, should be cut into small pieces and consumed in small portions.

Cookies:

Soft crumbly cookies should be eaten with your fingers, while little cookies should be eaten in one bite and giant or large cookies should be broken up into small pieces.

Ice Cream

Ice cream in a bowl should be eaten with a spoon, whereas ice cream on a plate should be eaten with a fork.

Pastries, pies and tarts

Because of their crumbly texture, tarts are typically eaten with a fork, whereas pies are typically eaten with a fork and spoon, and pastries are typically eaten with a fork due to their creamy texture.

Sorbets

Similar to ice cream, if served in a bowl, it should only be eaten with a spoon, if placed on a plate, a fork can be used.

Fruits

This is fairly common, fruits should only be eaten with a fork because a spoon will cause them to slip, which is not a pleasing sight for everyone.

Soft custards

Desserts, such as custards, should always be eaten with a spoon, whereas fruits in the custard (if any) should be eaten with a fork.

Like the main course, desserts have particular standards to follow in order to enjoy them to their fullest. I'm sure no one thinks about these norms and rules when they're at home, but it's crucial to be aware of them when you're out with others. Not only does it feel good to be aware of these guidelines, but it also makes the whole dessert experience wholesome.
