Tips on Wearing Flip-Flops (2024)

Their history dates to ancient Egypt. They became popular in this country after World War II when servicemen brought theJapanese versions home as souvenirs. The Dalai Lama frequently wears them. And many people today consider them an essentialaccessory of summer.

But the simple sandals known as flip-flops simply aren’t a good fit for every situation.

“While flip-flops are perfectly fine – and far better than going barefoot – in a number of settings, theydo have some drawbacks,” saidChristina S. Long, DPM, a podiatrist and instructor inorthopaedic services at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. “They really don’t offer too much supportor protection. Wearing them too often or for certain intensive activities can lead to a variety of foot problems.”

Flip-flop wearers can take steps to avoid most of those problems by following these recommendations from the American PodiatricMedical Association (APMA):

Opt for Leather

Shop for flip-flops made of high-quality soft leather. Leather minimizes the potential for blisters and other types of irritation.

Break Them In

Gently bend the flip-flop from end to end, ensuring it bends at the ball of the foot. Shoes of any kind should never foldin half. Do not choose shoes that are too flimsy.

Nothing Dangling

Make sure that your foot doesn't hang off of the edge of the flip-flop. A good shoe fit is vital to healthy feet.

Sturdiness is Key

Wear a sturdy pair of flip-flops when walking around a public pool, at the beach, in hotel rooms and in locker room areas.

Replace Frequently

Don't wear the same pair of flip-flops year after year. If they show signs of severe wear, discard them.

If They Bother You, Don’t Ignore the Signs

Don't ignore irritation between toes, where the toe thong fits. This can lead to blisters and possible infections.

Short Distances Only

Don't wear flip-flops while walking long distances. Even the sturdiest flip-flops offer little in terms of shock absorptionand arch support.

Save it for the Beach

Don't do yard work while wearing flip-flops. Always wear shoes that fully protect feet when doing outside activities suchas mowing the lawn or using a string trimmer.

Sneakers Over Flip-Flops for Sports

Don't play sports in flip-flops. This can lead to twisting of the foot or ankle, as well as sprains and breaks.

Additional foot health information – including lists of APMA-approved flip-flops and other products – is availableon theAPMA website.

“I specialize in foot and ankle medicine and surgery, and prevention is a big part of my practice,” Longsaid. “When it comes to flip-flops, all it really takes is a little common sense to avoid injuries.”
