There are two types of carpets piles, cut pile and loop pile. Cut pile means the carpet fibers are free at the ends. This often gives carpet a shaggy look and can make the carpeting feel softer. Loop pile means the fibers are twisted, looped, and then sewn into the carpet base making it more durable but not a luxurious feeling.

Cut Pile– Cut pile carpeting is mostly found in residential homes. The fuzzy layer that cut pile provides, leaves a soft layer of cushion around your house that is hard to beat. One of its only downsides is, it can be difficult to clean. Depending on the amount of shag that is associated with your carpet, it can make vacuuming extremely difficult. • Saxony

Cleaning Tip: You may find it useful and necessary to go over your carpet twice with the vacuum each week to ensure dirt doesn’t get ground into the carpet padding. If you have pets at home you may want to consider doing this twice a week.

Loop Pile- Loop pile is much more durable and therefore longer lasting than cut pile. This is why you will see loop pile in businesses or hotels. Loop pile can also be difficult to clean depending on how tight the loops are spaced. It is important to take note of this so you can care for the loop pile properly. The tighter the loops, the more often they will need to be vacuumed and cleaned.These are all considered loop piles:

Cleaning Tip: Loop pile carpets respond well to steam cleaning. Because of the way the fibers are twisted and looped, it can cause these carpets to hold excess water, dirt, and stains more than cut piles. Have your loop carpets steam cleaned every 6-12 months to help keep its integrity and make it last for years.

Fabric Type- Knowing the fabric your carpet is made of will also help you remove stains. Here is a list of common carpeting fabrics and the best ways to remove stains.

• Nylon- Use a rag with warm water immediately after noticing the stain, if warm water does not remove the stain add a drop of dish soap to a warm water solution.
• Polyester– polyester carpeting is very durable since it is synthetic. Use a rag, warm water, and synthetic carpet cleaner. These carpet cleaners can be bought at any local grocery store in most cases.
• Wool– Use warm water and white vinegar on tough stains. Remember to blot and brush the carpet. Wool especially can be damaged if it is scrubbed.
• Blend– Blended carpeting can be difficult to work with. Try using water, then add either dish soap or a little detergent if the stain is being stubborn.
