Under a new state law, the Tennessee General Assembly has waived state registration fees for Class A and Class B motor vehicles, for renewals after July 1, 2022 and before June 30, 2023. Does this waiver apply for newly registered vehicles?

No, the waiver is for vehicle registration renewals only, and it does not apply to newly registered vehicles.

What type of vehicles will the fee be waived on?

How much is the state fee that’s being waived?

If I have a disabled plate, am I eligible for the fee waiver?

Would specialty and personalized plates also have the fee waived?

If I’m renewing a personalized plate, is the $35 fee also waived?

No.

Are commercial vehicles eligible for the fee waiver?

No. Passenger vehicles, motor homes, motorcycles, and autocycles are the types of vehicles that qualify for this fee waiver.

Will emergency and firefighter plates be included?

Yes. The fee waiver is based on the type of vehicle (Class A or Class B).

If I renewed before July 2022, will I get a refund?

No. The waiver goes through June, 2023, so you will have your fee waived when you renew next year.

If I wait until July 1st to renew registration that expires in June 2022, will I get the discount?

No. The fee waiver will be based on the month of your actual registration expiration. You will get that discount when you renew in June 2023.
