Crocs may be the first shoe you think of when you start having heel pain from plantar fasciitis. Why? Because they are like walking on clouds, with plenty of cushion in the heel. Naturally, you'll reach for them - and ignore all fashion sense - for comfort alone.

👣 Why Crocs may feel good when you have plantar fasciitis

Crocs feel really good on your feel when you're having plantar fasciitis heel and foot pain, because they have lots of cushion.

They are made of a proprietary material, called Croslite. Croslite is primarily composed by polyethylene vinyl acetate or PEVA. Sometimes, referred to as just "EVA", this polymer is a type of plastic that you'll see other shoe brands use for their waterproof sandals. Even Birkenstock's waterproof sandals are made of EVA.

While this material is waterproof, it also feels like walking on foam or a thick cushion. Sounds great, right? Especially if you're having sharp, intense pain in your foot and heel every time you take a step.

So, while this can be helpful temporarily while you're experiencing a plantar fasciitis flare-up, wearing Crocs long-term will not help to heal, well, your heels.

❌ Why Crocs are bad for plantar fasciitis

Crocs are missing a vital and key element of proper shoes for plantar fasciitis feet: firm and supportive arch support.

Firm arch support is essential for recovering from a flare-up and providing proper support to the fascia in the arch of your foot, so you can prevent pain in the future.

Without proper arch support, the injury to your foot will continue to worsen, even if the cushion from the Crocs helps it feel better in the short-term.

The arch support in Crocs is too squishy and too low for someone with a normal arch, like me. It's definitely too low for someone with high arches. And, individuals with flat feet need proper arch support since they have fallen arches.

What would I recommend instead of Crocs for plantar fasciitis?

Wearing a shoe such as Birkenstocks with the soft footbed gives the best of both worlds. Cushion from the memory foam layer AND firm, substantial arch support.

Besides Birks, try one of these other best shoe brands to support and heal your plantar fasciitis.

🩴 The Crocs I own and how I wear them

I own one pair of Crocs (pictured below) and wear them for very short time frames at home. I usually wear them if I'm going out in the garden or yard when the ground is wet and want a pair of shoes I can easily wash.

If I wear them longer than 5-10 minutes, my feet start hurting in my arches, the middle of my foot (especially the right one) and my ankle becomes weak.

After wearing the Crocs for a little while, I put my Birkenstock Madrid one-strap sandals back on, which I wear as slippers in the house.

I can immediately feel the difference in the firm arch support on the Birks. The pain goes away and my feet feel much more supported as I walk around the house.

So, if you have to wear Crocs for temporary pain relief, that's fine. But, I highly recommend shopping for and wearing a more supportive shoe long-term.

FAQs

Are Crocs good for plantar fasciitis? ›

Should I Wear Crocs for My Plantar Fasciitis? Crocs are a great pair of shoes you can wear if you have plantar fasciitis and you would like to get some of the relief your feet deserve.

Should people with plantar fasciitis wear Crocs? ›

Many doctors recommend them to their patients who suffer from plantar foot pain because they are comfortable and supportive. Clogs and Crocs can make long hours on your feet more tolerable if you have plantar fasciitis–as long as they have the right custom arch/heel support and cushioning that fits the condition.

Are Crocs or Birkenstocks better for plantar fasciitis? ›

Why We Recommend It. Birkenstocks are a favorite for foot pain thanks to their moldable cork footbed that fits to your foot for complete support. Birkenstock Milano sandals also feature a third strap around the back of the foot for added support, and all three are fully adjustable to keep feet in place.

What do podiatrists say about wearing Crocs? ›

That said, Crocs lack arch support, so exercising, walking for an extended period of time, or working in them is not recommended by foot specialists. The plastic construction may also lead to sweaty, stinky feet and even blisters.

Which footwear is best for plantar fasciitis? ›

Hiking shoes

This can help prevent slips and falls, which can — unsurprisingly — make your plantar fasciitis symptoms even worse. In addition, try to find hiking shoes with good ankle support to prevent injury. Try brands like HOKA, Kuru®, Merrell® and Keen®.

What should you not wear with plantar fasciitis? ›

Stiletto Heels or Ultra-High Heels

Stiletto heels and other ultra-high heels are one of the worst types of shoes you can wear if you have plantar fasciitis (and put you at risk for developing the condition if you don't have it yet!).

Should you walk barefoot with plantar fasciitis? ›

Walking or standing barefoot puts excessive strain on the plantar fascia. The absence of cushioning and shock absorption exposes the already tender tissue to impact and pressure from the ground. This can exacerbate the inflammation, leading to heightened pain and a prolonged recovery period.

What should I wear during the day for plantar fasciitis? ›

Wear supportive shoes and orthotics

Every time your heel hits the ground as you walk or run, you place a significant amount of tension on the fascia. A cushioned shoe or an orthotic (shoe insert) reduces the tension and prevents tears from forming.

Are Skechers good if you have plantar fasciitis? ›

In the ongoing quest for relief from plantar fasciitis, Skechers shoes emerge as a viable option for many individuals seeking comfort and support. However, the suitability of Skechers for plantar fasciitis ultimately depends on factors such as foot type, severity of symptoms, and personal preferences.

Should you wear shoes all the time with plantar fasciitis? ›

Put on your shoes as soon as you get out of bed. Going barefoot or wearing slippers may make your pain worse.

Why do my feet hurt after wearing Crocs? ›

Why? Crocs don't secure the heel - like flip flops crocs won't keep your heel in place; when that happens you're going to grip with your toes which can lead to tendinitis, worsening of existing foot problems, and nails issues. Crocs are not supportive - crocs are made out of resin which is very bendable.

What is the number one treatment for plantar fasciitis? ›

Stretching and Physical Therapy

Stretching is one of the best treatments for plantar fasciitis. Stretching should be focused on the plantar fascia and the Achilles tendon. A physical therapist can show you stretching exercises that you can repeat at home several times a day.

What will make plantar fasciitis worse? ›

Standing for long periods: Spending too much time standing — especially if you're standing on a hard surface or in one position — makes the effects of plantar fasciitis worse.

Is it better to wear flat shoes with plantar fasciitis? ›

Wearing the wrong shoes can trigger the onset of your Plantar Fasciitis. For example, flat shoes, which offer no flat support, can put too much stress on your plantar fascia and cause it to tear.

Do tight shoes make plantar fasciitis worse? ›

Ill-fitting shoes can worsen your plantar fasciitis woes. Too tight, and they can cause pressure and friction on the already irritated fascia. Too loose, and your foot may slide around, causing strain. It's a Goldilocks situation – the fit needs to be just right.
