I grew up in Oklahoma, where these Bisquick sausage balls were on the menu at every Christmas party. I served these at my annual holiday party, after moving to California, and everyone raved about them. When asked, everyone said they had never had them before, that’s when I realized that these were a Midwest/Southern thing!

Of course, I’ve continued the tradition of serving this bisquick sausage balls recipe at pretty much every party I’ve hosted since moving to California, which means I’ve made them about 375 times!

Maybe that’s a slight over-exaggeration, but seriously, I’ve made them a lot! This recipe varies slightly from others you might find online, or even printed on the Bisquick box. After making them dozens and dozens of times, I’ve perfected the ratio of Biquick mix, to sausage, to cheese.

This recipe for Bisquick sausage balls will never be dry or crumble apart while you’re trying to form the mixture into balls. It has the perfect ratio of all three ingredients that result in moist, flavorful sausage balls every time!

With just 3 ingredients, you can mix up these sausage balls for everything from holiday parties, to birthday parties, to Super Bowl Sunday. They’re an easy snack, appetizer, or brunch recipe, and always a hit with adults and kids alike!

Ingredients

  • Bisquick – this classic baking mix is easy to find on the baking aisle of almost every major grocery store. Using this mix makes this recipe come together so easily with only 3 ingredients!
  • Sausage – I almost always use Jimmy Dean sausage to make this recipe. It has great flavor and turns out perfect every time. I like to use the “hot” variety for a little more flavor and spice, but I’ve also made this recipe dozens of times with mild sausage, and it’s also delicious. This is just a matter of personal preference. You can really make this recipe with any loose sausage. Breakfast sausage, Italian sausage or turkey sausage will also work.
  • Cheddar cheese – you can use medium or sharp cheddar cheese to make this recipe. If you want a stronger bite and richer cheddar flavor, use sharp cheddar. I do recommend buying a block of cheddar cheese and shredding it at home yourself for the best flavor. Bagged pre-shredded cheese has additives and will not melt as well as freshly-grated cheese.

Instructions

  1. Mix the ingredients. In a large bowl, combine the bisquick mix, sausage, and shredded cheese.
  2. Form the balls. Shape the sausage mixture into 20-24 1-inch balls, about the size of a golf ball.
  3. Bake. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easy cleanup, then place the sausage balls on the baking sheet. Bake in a 375°F preheated oven for 12-15 minutes.
  4. Dig in! Serve the sausage balls immediately on a serving plate. Optionally garnish with chopped fresh cilantro.

Recipe tips

  • You can make the sausage balls ahead of time, and bake them right before serving. Assemble the sausage balls, then store the uncooked sausage balls in a zipper bag, or storage container, until you’re ready to bake and serve them.
  • If you want to bake the sausage balls ahead of time for a party, you can store them in a slow cooker on warm after baking.

What to serve with them

Serve these sausage balls on their own, orwith a dipping sauce. They honestly don’t even need a sauce, but I’m a saucy kind of girl, so sometimes I add a little bowl of sauce on the side for dipping! Totally optional, but these sausage balls are delicious served with any of these dressings or sauces.

  • Buffalo sauce
  • Ranch dressing
  • Blue cheese dressing
  • Nacho cheese sauce
  • Creamy chipotle sauce
  • BBQ sauce
  • White BBQ sauce
  • Honey mustard

If you want to make a “sausage ball bar”, like I have at parties in the past, serve these bisquick sausage balls, along with these other sausage ball recipes.

  • Mexican Sausage Balls
  • Buffalo Cheesy Sausage Balls
  • Gluten Free Sweet Potato Sausage Balls
  • Sausage Stuffing Balls
  • Cheesy Taco Sausage Balls

How to store and reheat

Store leftover Bisquick sausage balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to5 days.

Reheat the sausage balls in the oven or air fryer, for the best texture. In the oven, reheat the sausage balls on a foil-lined baking sheet at 400°F for 6-8 minutes.

In the air fryer, reheat the sausage balls at 400°F for 4-5 minutes.

You can also reheat them in the microwave on a plate for 60 seconds, but the texture won’t quite be the same.

You can freeze cooked sausage balls for up to 3 months. Make sure the balls are cooled completely before storing them in a freezer-safe container. Thaw the sausage balls for 24 hours in the refrigerator before reheating them in the oven or air fryer, and serving.

Make them gluten free

To make gluten free bisquick sausage balls, either usegluten-free Bisquick, purchased at the grocery store, ormake gluten free bisquick at home. To make it at home, combine 3 cups gluten free all-purpose flour with4 ½ teaspoons baking powder, ¾ teaspoon salt and 3 tablespoons olive oil.

    hi, Whitney
i have plans to make these tonight for a quick get together tomorrow morning, and wanted to know if they can be cooked in the air fryer?
it’s getting to be that time of year when using the oven is a last resort. i hate to use the oven and destroy all the a/c’s hard work, ya know??
    thank you!

Hi Shelley, yes, I’d recommend air frying them at 350°F for 10 minutes. Enjoy!
