In October 2009, Tesco Personal Finance was renamed Tesco Bank.

Tesco Bank began life in 1997 as Tesco Personal Finance, a joint venture between Tesco plc and Royal Bank of Scotland plc. In 2008, Tesco bought out RBS's share of the business and introduced the new name, Tesco Bank. Today, Tesco Bank is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tesco.

As announced on 9 February 2024, we're proposing to transfer our banking business to Barclays Bank UK PLC (Barclays). If the proposed transfer takes effect, Barclays will continue to use the Tesco Bank brand on all existing Tesco Bank banking products through a partnership agreement with Tesco.

On 9 February Tesco and Barclays announced a long-term strategic partnership, initially for a 10-year period, to provide customers with Tesco-branded banking products and services. This agreement includes the sale of Tesco's existing banking operations to Barclays, one of the UK's leading banks.

However, the Tesco Bank brand will remain – and there's NO change for new or existing customers right now. Supermarket giant Tesco, which wholly owns and operates Tesco Bank, currently has 3.7 million customers across the services being sold to Barclays.

Tesco has announced the sale of most of its banking arm to Barclays in a deal worth up to £1bn. The UK's largest retailer, which had been in discussions with other major lenders including HSBC and Lloyds over a deal, said all 2,800 staff at Tesco Bank would transfer to Barclays under the agreement over time.
